General Information

Contestants are required to complete an entry form and will receive a claim check which gives them the right to remove their model from the contest area. Photos of many contest entries, including winning entries, will be posted on a web site in addition to being published in O Scale Trains magazine. Models may be handled carefully (by modelers) for judging and for photographing, so if you have special instructions for handling your entry please provide them on a sheet of paper separate from your entry form.

The contest schedule is as follows:

Two Contests

The convention will have two separate and parallel contests. One is the Favorite Model (AKA Popular Vote, etc.) contest, where there are no requirements to enter the contest, and the winners are determined by the voting performed by the convention attendees. The other is a judged contest that will be based upon NMRA Judged Contest entry and judging rules. It will be possible to enter both contests and to win in both contests.

You do not need to be an NMRA member to enter the judged contest. If you are not an NMRA member any Achievement Program (AP) points awarded your entries will have no value.

Models will be grouped for display by category, and it may not be possible to tell what contest, judged or favorite model, individual models are in.

In addition to the contests, it will be possible to "enter" a model as a display only, e.g., it will not be voted on or judged.

Favorite Model/Popular Vote

The Favorite Model contest is a popular vote contest where the convention attendees vote for their favorite model in each category. Both models and photos can be entered in this contest.

There are two Favorite Model contests: model and photo.

Categories for models are:
Categories for photos are:
First, second, and third place winners will receive a ribbon and a certificate.

NMRA Judged Contest

The other contest is a judged contest, where models will be judged by individuals who are judging by the rules based upon the NMRA judged contest rules. Here is a link to the contest section of the NMRA website; you will find (using the navigation bar on the right side of the page) information on Eligibility, Judged Model Contest, Photo Contest, Contest Guidelines, AP Guidelines, and Contest Forms.

For the convention it is not necessary to be an NMRA member to enter the judged contest. However, AP points will only be awarded to NMRA members.

There are no other judged contests, e.g., Modules, Passes, Arts and Crafts, etc., at the convention although the NMRA contest rules provide for them.

It will be possible for NMRA member entrants to earn AP points in this contest because at least two of the judges will meet the NMRA requirements for judges who can award AP points.

Although the NMRA rules provide for them, the convention will not make any special awards other than identification of first, second, and third place winners in each category; those winners will receive a ribbon and a certificate.

The judged model contest has the following categories:
The judged photo contest has the following categories:
For those of you long-time O Scale West Favorite Model contestants, please note that there are some important qualifications for a model or photo to be entered in the judged contest:
Note to those who have already volunteered or who will later volunteer to be a judge. Model contest judges have said that the judging process where models were critically discussed with other judges was one of the best ways they learned about building better models. So there is real pay off for the judging work. If you would like to volunteer to be a contest judge, please contact us. Note that the judging process is carefully defined by the NMRA, with all the information needed to be a judge posted on the NMRA's web site; click here then click on AP Guidelines to access detailed information about judging.

Suggestions for Success in the Favorite Model Contest

Enter early! Vote counts are directly proportional to the number of people who see your model. A model entered at 9AM Thursday will be viewed (and potentially voted for) by many more people than a model entered at 9AM Friday when there are 3 hours of viewing/voting time left before the contest area is closed for judging.

Suggestions for Success in the Judged Contest

Prepare in advance a detailed write up of the prototype you modeled and of the model you built. Include drawings and photos. The more information the judges have to evaluate your model(s) the better off you are as a contest competitor. Since each model is judged independently of all other models, if you enter more than one model in the same category you are not competing against yourself.

Here is a link to the NMRA judging guidelines (click on the link in Section 1). This will tell you what the judges are looking for.

Things We Need to Know in Advance

In order to accommodate your models in the contests and to manage the contests, we need some information in advance of your arrival at the convention:

1. If you will be entering more than two models in the contest, we need to know what they are and how big they are so we can plan space to accommodate them. When deciding which models to enter in the popular vote contest, you might want to consider that while many models are impressive, the viewer of them may have difficulty choosing which one of them to vote for.

2. If you will be entering a rolling stock set longer than 3 feet (e.g., an ABBA set of diesels), or a display larger than 3 x 4 feet.

3. If you are entering the favorite train contest, how long is the train.

4. The convention may need to limit the number of entries per person in the Favorite Train category in order to ensure that all who desire to enter can be accommodated.

Entry Forms

There is one form to enter the Favorite Model/Photo contest; note that this form has two sides. The same form with the addition of a second form is used to enter the judged contest.

The Adobe Acrobat Reader program is required to view and print these forms.

Here is the link to download the form to enter the Favorite Model/Photo contest.

Here is the link to download the form to enter the judged contest; this is the same form you will download from the link in the previous paragraph. Note that there is an error in the instructions on the back of this form: it says you have to be an NMRA member to enter the judged contest - that is an error - you do not have to be an NMRA member to enter the judged contest. Here is the link to download the second form that is needed to enter the judged contest.

Do not mail the completed forms. Bring them with you.
