O Scale Convention Cars

There will be three cars available at the convention. One is a special run for the convention. The other two were special run cars for previous O Scale West meets.

The new special run car is the AtlasO Trainman 53 foot 6 inch gondola. The AtlasO trainman car is an upgraded version of the former Altas/Roco gondola. That car was based upon the PRR G31 series gondolas. AC&F built clones of the cars for other roads including the SP who bought 50 and then 300. The first lot of 50 cars were delivered in black paint; the remaining 300 were delivered in SP red/brown freight car color. The convention will have 80 of the black cars in two road numbers and 44 of the red cars in two road numbers; all cars will be 2-rail. These cars will be priced at $50 each. The AtlasO artwork for the car is shown below. The artwork depicts a 3-rail car; the convention car will be an RTR 2-rail car. RTR 3-rail cars will be available from Petersen Supply.

In addition to the special run convention car, the convention will have two other special run cars available for sale. These cars were produced for the O Scale West meets.

One car is the Weaver 40 foot double door boxcar painted two tone gray and lettered for Union Pacific Express Service. These cars roamed off UP rails; for example, there is a photo of one in Chicago. These cars are available with plastic trucks at $35 each and with die cast trucks at $45 each.

The other car is the Red Caboose PFE wood refrigerator car decorated in the post-1952 PFE scheme where the heralds were black and white and the side hardware (door hinges, ladders, and grabs) were painted the body color orange instead of black. These cars are $40 each and come with metal wheelsets and KD couplers.

How to Buy the Cars

Convention attendees can buy cars at the convention.

It is not necessary to attend the convention to buy cars. To order cars by mail, download, print, fill out, and mail the form with your payment; click here to download the form. You will need the .pdf file viewer, Adobe Acrobat, to view and print the file; if you do not have Adobe Acrobat installed on your computer, click here to download the Acrobat viewer which is free.

Orders will be processed (booked, payments deposited) as they are received; orders will be shipped in the order that they were received. In the event an order could not be filled completely or at all, refunds will be made. A shipping and handling charge will apply to cars purchased by mail order. Note that the gondolas will not be available until the convention starts.

What Happened to the Chateau Martin Car?

At the last minute Lionel told us that the car could not be delivered by the convention, so we decided to replace the Chateau Martin car with a car that could be available at the convention.

For those of you (it seems there are plenty) who are fascinated by the Chateau Martin car we originally planned to produce, the web page that describes that project has been preserved for your reference. Click here to get to it.

It may be possible, with some work on your part for you to have a Chateau Martin car. The major work is the painting of the body in the Chateau Martin color. Lettering is available; Protocraft will produce decals for three versions of the lettering schemes/slogans, and Clover House has a limited supply of dry transfers for a different scheme/slogan as seen on the cars that were prepared to promote the meet car. The process of converting the car from 3-rail to 2-rail is straight forward; this process uses readily available wheelsets and couplers.

The major work of painting the car body in the Chateau Martin color will be done for you for a charge. The process is that you would provide the Lionel milk car and send it to the people who will do the painting. The car you provide would be stripped and painted the distinctive Chateau Martin color and then returned to you ready for decal application and the relatively simple conversion from 3-rail to 2-rail. You would be responsible for obtaining and applying the lettering, and the conversion from 3-rail to 2-rail, including obtaining all parts and lettering needed.

If you are interested in having a car (limit one to a customer) repainted in the Chateau Martin color, please use the convention contact link above to make an inquiry. This work is not part of the convention activity. A limited number of cars will be processed. The timing of deliveries will be independent of the convention schedule.
