The summer weather in the San Francisco
Bay Area and central California is made of up of several
climates. There is the coastal climate, the bay climate, and the
valley climate.
- The coastal climate applies to
the coast and to San Fransisco.
During
the time of the convention, this weather normally is cool (50s - 60s)
and
breezy to windy day and night. There may be low clouds during most of
the day. Note that the city of San Francisco experiences this climate;
to quote Mark Twain: "The coldest winter of my life was summer in San
Francisco."
- The bay climate is low humidity
and has three phases: morning, mid-day
through evening, and
night.
Morning may be have low clouds with temperatures in the high
50s. By mid-day the low clouds will
have been dissipated by the sun, and it will warm up to the mid-80s. By
mid-afternoon
a strong cool northerly breeze will start to blow and the temperature
will drop to the point where if you are sitting outside in the shade
you will be grateful for a warm sweater or jacket. By dark the breeze
usually stops and it is comfortable outside without
a sweater/jacket.
- The valley climate is much warmer that the bay climate, with
daytime
temperatures in the high 90s - low 100s.
Sacramento and Fresno are in the valley
climate. If you plan to
visit the layouts in Mariposa, or even drive from the Sierra Nevada
mountains across the state to Santa Clara, you will pass through the
valley climate. In the east-west direction, the width of the valley
climate area is approximately 100-150 miles.
